SCHOENE, LOTTE

SCHOENE, LOTTE (née Charlotte Bodenstein, 1891–1977), soprano singer. Schoene was born in Vienna, where she studied, making her debut at the Volksoper there in 1912. In 1917 she was engaged at the Vienna Imperial Opera, and sang there until 1925, after which year she moved to Berlin. She also sang regularly at the Salzburg Festival from 1922 to 1934, her pure lyric soprano in Mozart roles winning great admiration. She settled in Paris in 1933, and made appearances at the Opéra and Opéra-Comique, but on the outbreak of World War II she went into hiding in the French Alps. In 1945, Schoene resumed her career as a concert singer, but retired in 1953 to teach singing in Paris. (Max Loppert (2nd ed.)
